Job Title: Director of Music Ministry

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Director of Music Ministry, in collaboration with the Pastor, will promote the use of music as an expression of worship and a vehicle for faith development.  The Director will plan, oversee and coordinate all aspects of the church’s music program, ensuring it enhances worship services and aligns with the church’s vision and mission: A church that gathers, grows and goes.

They will administer an inclusive, diverse and meaningful music ministry with children, youth and adults. This includes leading worship through music, managing volunteer and professional musicians, and developing a music program that inspires congregants, and thereby increases the opportunity for growth in church membership.

  • Salary: $35,000 - $40,000

  • Hours: 20-25 per week

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Bring enthusiasm and passion for music during worship.

  • Determine the music ministry goals and plan the weekly and long-range music for regular, seasonal and summer worship schedules.

  • Ensure that all services have excellent, varied and inspirational music offerings.

  • Provide piano and/or organ accompaniment during worship.

  • Recruit, cultivate, rehearse and direct the Chancel Choir and Bell Choir.

  • Recruit, rehearse, direct and develop other choral or instrumental groups including children’s choir, praise band and others. The direction of each of these choirs may be delegated to volunteers as desirable; although the coordination of each remains the responsibility of the Director.

  • Foster a welcoming and engaging environment for musicians, both professional and volunteer.

  • Engage the congregation by providing inspiring music for spiritual growth.

  • Participate in the planning for alternative musical performances or forms of worship.

  • This may include contracting with a choral conductor when plans indicate both a conductor and accompanist.    

  • Select music including traditional hymns and contemporary songs and arrange for a hymn leader to provide leadership for congregational singing.

  • Provide leadership for the provision of music for special events.

  • Consult with a congregant or their family about weddings and funerals whether to either provide these special services at an agreed upon rate or help contract for the services of other suitable musicians.

  • Ensure that music ministry resources are updated and maintained: tuning and maintenance of piano and organ, maintenance of the Carillons, and handbells, and organization of the music library.

  • Participate in staff meetings weekly and special meetings where applicable.

  • Communicate effectively with musicians, staff and the Pastor regarding scheduling, plans, guest or special performers.

  • Prepare and oversee the budget for music ministry.

  • Report music to licensing agencies (CCLI) to assure compliance with copyright laws and maintain necessary licenses to comply with the law.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated ability, experience and education that provides preparation for music direction, coaching and performance, both vocal and instrumental.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Knowledge of United Methodist theology and liturgical practice to allow proper selection of music for services.

  • An evident passion for the role of music as a form of worship and ability to share this passion with the congregation.

  • Enthusiasm for the ministry of St. Matthew’s.

  • Willingness to work with all age groups and compliance with Safe Sanctuary requirements.

  • Knowledgeable of current copyright laws and licenses.
